The 1911 England Census

The British Government took the 1911 Census on April 2 1911. The records were released in January 2009 even though a full 100 years had not passed. These were the first census records to be completed by the head of the family so one can see the handwriting of that person for the first time.

In addition to the information provided in the previous census, this census records how long the people have been married, how many children were 'born alive', how many are still living and [presumably as a cross-check on the maths] how many have died. That information is recorded in the comments column below. People were also asked to state what industry they worked in if it was not clear from their occupations.

For this census there are two RG numbers, RG14 and RG78. For the first time, the schedules completed by individual householders were kept and they are accessed via RG14 which is the logical number in the sequence [1861 was RG9, 1871 RG10, 1881 RG11, 1891 RG12 and 1901 RG13]. In addition, the enumerators' summary books which list each of the properties in the enumeration district were retained and can be accessed via RG78. The data has a different Piece Number for each RG but the Registration District, Sub-District, Enumeration District and Schedule Numbers are common. On this page both references are given wherever possible in the general form : RG14-PNnnnn / RG78-PNnnnn-RDnn-SDnn-EDnn-SDnnn.

In the table below, the PRO Reference is a link to an image of the relevant [RG14] schedule of the census. A new tab will open when you click on the link, just close it to return to this page.
