The 1871 England Census

The British Government took the 1871 Census on the 2nd of April 1871. This page summarises, on a household basis, all of the Inkson information from the 1871 records that has been found to date.

The records for 1871 do not seem to record all of the Inksons even though they were clearly alive. THI was eventually found indexed as Thomas H 'Tnkson' with a T rather than an I. Others have been found indexed as 'Jackson', 'Inhson', 'Jutson' and 'Johnson' so who knows who is out there?

In the table below, the PRO Reference is a link to an image of the relevant page of the census. A new tab will open when you click on the link, just close it to return to this page.

Note on Grimsby

1,2 and 3 Fish Dock in Grimsby clearly have a connection to the Inksons :

1871 Grimsby

They are presumably the start of the Grimsby Inksons but how does it all fit together? Houses #1 and #3 seem to have senior members of the Chamberlains [61 and 71 years old, respectively] and #2 has a junior member [40 years old], possibly a son of one of the others. Other records show that a Francis and Mary Chamberlain from Heckington in Lincs had children called William b. ABT 1800 and David b. ABT 1808 and that William had a son David b. ABT 1830. which fits with him being 40 in this census.

David's wife Ann in #1 was an Inkson born in Lynn [in about 1811 according to her age given here]. We know that because they were married in Manchester in August 1856 [David a widower, Ann a spinster] when Ann was said to be 42 so born in about 1814. There was an Ann baptised in Kings Lynn in September 1808, assumed to be the daughter of the 1801 Inkson - Harborow marriage so sister to William, Margaret, Frances and John but that doesn't seem to fit [or she wasn't very good at maths]. There is a Mary Ann baptised in Kings Lynn in July 1810 which is a better fit but at the time of writing we don't even have records for John and Jane Inkson, her declared parents. George W Inkson, declared as a nephew, is living at #1, also born in Lynn [in about 1851]. We have no record of a George W being born around then but there is a George H registered in 1849 and he is the son of John so a good fit with 'nephew' if Ann is indeed the 1808 Ann, brother of John.

The real enigma is Walter J Inkson at #3 however. He is described as a son in law but is only 10 so born in about 1861, also in Lynn. He cannot be the son of George W from #1 as there is only 10 years between them. There is a birth registered in the first quarter of 1861 as Walter James. The most likely solution is that the two are brothers and are the children of John Inkson b. 1814 in the 1861 census [RG9-Pc1256-Fo31-Pg29-Sc143] and hence the brothers of William who is living with the Wakefields and the two siblings living with the Martineaus [see above]. John had died in 1867 and Mary does not obviously appear in this census [possibly dead?] so it makes sense that the children dispersed.

However, there is another possibility and that is that William, after his first wife died, married Mary Inkson née Black, the widow of John Inkson b. 1814. If that is correct then the use of 'son in law' to describe Walter J makes perfect sense.

We also should not loose sight of the fact that, in a previous generation, Susanna Inkson b. ABT 1781 married a Kings Lynn Chamberlain. She was the youngest child of George b. 1735 and Margaret so a sister of Thomas b. ABT 1772 and therefore an aunt of John b. 1814. Is there any connection between the Kings Lynn Chamberlains and the Heckington Chamberlains?

Since the above was written, we have requisitioned [in November 2020] the wedding certificate of William and Mary :

William and Mary Marriage

It can be seen that Mary is, in fact, the widow of John b. 1814 so the description of Walter J as a 'son in law' makes perfect sense. The certificate also shows that William's father was a Francis Chamberlain. That will help trying to track down any relationship between these Lincolnshire Chamberlains and the Norfolk Chamberlains.
