Thomas INKSON b. ABT 1683 Kings Lynn, Norfolk

We are back in the 17th century where records are minimal and some of those that do exist are only partially legible. Where conjecture is involved this is explained but nonetheless, please treat everything here with caution.

We know of the existence of and approximate year of birth of Thomas from a plaque that is [or was?] in St Nicholas' Chapel Kings Lynn. It was recorded in a book called A complete list of the Inscriptions on the Tablets, Slabs and Monuments in the Chapel of St Nicholas, King's Lynn published in 1937. The chapel guide book notes that, since then : 'Unfortunately the stone dais of 1981 obscures 27 ledger stones listed there in the chancel area.' so it may no longer be visible. The inscription was recorded as reading :

In Memory of Thomas Inkson late Baker in Lynn who departed this Life on the 30th Oct 1743.
Aged 60 Years.
In Memory of Margaret daughter of Thomas and [Marga]ret Inkson
who dyed 2 Feb 1732 21 Years old.
Also Margaret relict of Thomas Inkson Died 29th of August 1746. Aged 58.

From the above we can calculate that Thomas was born ABT 1683, that Margaret his wife was born ABT 1688 and that Margaret his daughter was born ABT 1711.

We also know of the existence of a couple called Thomas and Margaret Inkson from various parish records but
there is no record for the birth or baptism of ThomasAnother researcher claims that there was a Thomas Inkson born in Kings Lynn in 1675 of George Inkson b, 1650 and Mary née Ashley but that researcher states that that Thomas is not known to have married or had issue and is said to have died in 1736.
.

A Thomas Inkson married a Margret [sic] Bates or Batts, 'both single in this parish' in St Nicholas' Kings Lynn on 26 Sep 1706. Available baptism records show that they had at least six children : 'Gorg' [1710], MaryThe baptism record shows Mary's parents as Thomas and Mary Inkson but it is assumed that this refers to Thomas and Margaret, in part because the Archdeacon's transcript records the parents as 'Thomas Inkson Margret [sic]'. [1713], William [1717], Thomas(1) [1718], RichardThe baptism record shows Richard's parents as Thomas and Mary Inkson but it is assumed that this refers to Thomas and Margaret. [1719] and Thomas(2) [1722]. In addition, there is the Margaret referred to on the plaque for whom no baptism record has been found. One suspects that there were more children.

For the purposes of developing this tree it has been assumed that it was Thomas b. ABT 1683 who married Margaret and that there were not two Thomas Inksons at this time, it was his wife who was variously Margaret and Mary.

Possibly of great significance is their first known child, 'Gorg' [presumed George], who is a candidate for being the George who married Elizabeth Metcalf in Swaffham in 1733 and would hence be the father of George b. 1735 from whom many important English branches of the Inkson tree flow. It should be noted, however, that other researchers have another George, born in 1704 of a George and Alice Inkson, as the George who married Elizabeth Metcalf. No parish records have yet been found for George b. 1704 but the existence of a George Inkson as a father of children at this time is proved by parish records.

Thanks to Margaret's will, we now know that Mary b. ABT 1713 married a Robert Chennery. They were married on 30 Aug 1745 in All Saints' South Lynn. It is not clear whether they had a family of their own.
